By Sharon Siame

The Ministry of Education has further postponed the opening of schools and colleges from January 29, 2024 to February 12, 2024.

Education Minister DOUGLAS SYAKALIMA says this is in view of the Cholera cases which have spread to other parts of the country.

Mr. SYAKALIMA says the National Disaster Management and Mitigation Council of Ministers at a meeting held today, guided the Ministry of Education to further postpone the opening date to February 12.

Addressing the media in Lusaka today, the Education Minister said that the school calendar for 2024 for all public, private, grant aided, community schools and colleges has since been adjusted to recover the lost time.

Mr. SYAKALIMA said that schools and colleges will open for term ONE on Monday February 12, 2024 and close on Friday April 26, 2024.

He said that term TWO will run from Monday May 6 to August 9, 2024.

Mr. SYAKALIMA also said schools and colleges will open for term THREE on Monday September 2, 2024 and will close on Friday December 6, 2024.

He said alternative modes of learning which have been put in place by the Ministry of Education should be utilised to ensure that learners are kept constructively busy.

Tragic Loss: Monze Nursing Student Found Dead in Her Sleep

The community of Monze is in mourning following the tragic passing of Agness Mang’wato, a third-year nursing student with a promising future ahead of her. Many are struggling to come to terms with this unexpected tragedy

The 23-year-old was discovered lifeless in her hostel, leaving her fellow students devastated. Agness had only complained of a headache before retiring to bed the previous evening. When attempts were made to wake her up, it became apparent that she had tragically passed away during the night.

Agness, hailing from Chikankata district in Southern Province, was the daughter of Mr. Mang’wato, the headmaster of Ngangula secondary school. This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and the police are yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of her untimely demise.

Our hearts go out to Agness’ family and friends during this difficult time.

Also prohibited are funeral gatherings of more than five people if the person being buried has died of cholera.

It is also an offence to keep people home who have symptoms of cholera while authorised officers can order closure of public premises without sufficient sanitation and hygiene.

β€œAuthorised officers may enter any premises to search for a case of cholera or to enquire if there is a case of cholera,” Ms Masebo said during a briefing in Lusaka yesterday. β€œAuthorised officers may prohibit or restrict trading in or vending of food in unsanitary conditions, leading to the closure of premises that do not comply with hygienic practices.

β€œNon-compliance to the measures is an offence that will attract a fine of 2,500 penalty units or six months simple imprisonment or both.”
